Transition to Post-Secondary Education and Employment

Program History

The Transition to Post-Secondary Education and Employment Program was developed through a partnership between SIAST, the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan, and the provincial government. The purpose of the program was to provide adults with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD with the necessary skills and strategies to be independent learners in a post-secondary education or employment setting. After more than a decade of success, the purpose remains the same.

Program Description

Transition is a bridging program up to 10 months in length. The focus is to bridge adults who have a regular Grade 12 or equivalent, a diagnosed learning disability and/or ADHD into post-secondary schooling or employment. The skills and strategies learned will be directly related to these two settings.

Program Purpose

Students collaborate with instructors to design personal development, learning, and career planning activities that will support their individual goals and allow them to experience a post-secondary or employment environment.

The program recognizes that these skills and strategies need to be taught not only in isolation but also in conjunction with academic and employment studies. Examples of learning opportunities are such that
  • students may have an opportunity to audit classes at the post-secondary level
  • take a class for credit at a post-secondary institution
  • upgrade 30 level classes through the Basic Ed. Department
  • apply skills and strategies to an employment setting
Program/Student Funding

Tuition and materials may be provided by Employability Assistance for people with Disabilities (EAPD). Living costs are the student’s responsibility. Students may be eligible for income support through the Provincial Training Allowance.
